Preserving legacy for future generations

Their story must never be forgotten

Preserving the legacy of Normandy veterans and inspiring younger generations to understand the sacrifice, courage, and significance of D-Day.

About the Trust

Preserving legacy, supporting veterans, and educating future generations.

The Spirit of Normandy Trust was founded in 1994 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Normandy campaign. Today, the Trust continues to honour those who served through veteran welfare, public education, and the protection of important memorials connected to D-Day and the Battle for Normandy.

Welfare

Supporting remaining veterans and their dependants, in liaison with SSAFA, and helping ensure they receive the care and dignity they deserve in later life.

Education

Teaching children and the wider public about the events leading up to the Normandy Landings, the significance of the Second World War, and why remembrance still matters today.

Ongoing Responsibility

Since the disbanding of the NVA, the Trust has also taken on the maintenance of the Normandy Campaign Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum, the Montgomery Statue at Colleville-Montgomery in Normandy, and the Spirit of Normandy plot at the Field of Remembrance in Westminster Abbey.

Why Our Mission Matters

The story of D-Day is not just history. It is the foundation of the freedom we live with today.

The scale of the Normandy Landings and the Battle for Normandy remains extraordinary. It was one of the largest airborne and seaborne operations in history, requiring immense courage, planning, secrecy, and sacrifice.

Under British command alone, 22,442 people never returned home. Behind every statistic were ordinary men and women asked to undertake an extraordinary task in the name of freedom.

The Spirit of Normandy Trust exists to ensure that those individuals, and their families, are not forgotten — and that younger generations continue to understand the cost of peace, service, and remembrance.

“We strive to ensure that every individual involved in D-Day and the Battle for Normandy, and their dependants, receive the support they need in their advancing years and that their service, which had such a significant impact on world history, is never forgotten.”

Richard Palusinski — Chairman, The Spirit of Normandy Trust
